An Evening With Paul Hassell ~ ‘Photography My Way’
Last night at the Coalville & District Photographic Society, we had the pleasure of welcoming Paul Hassell for an inspiring talk titled ‘Photography My Way’. Paul, a highly talented photographer, took us on a journey through his vast collection of portraits, each accompanied by a compelling story that brought the images to life.
Paul’s approach to photography is deeply personal, driven by a passion for capturing authentic human moments. His portraits are more than just photographs; they are windows into the lives of the people he meets. Throughout the evening, he shared his experiences of connecting with his subjects, often in spontaneous and unexpected situations. From street photography to carefully composed environmental portraits, his work demonstrates a keen eye for emotion, light, and storytelling.
One of the key takeaways from Paul’s talk was the importance of engaging with people. He emphasized that the best portraits come from genuine interactions rather than staged moments. He also highlighted the significance of trust between photographer and subject, which allows for honest and powerful imagery.
Paul’s technical expertise was evident in his ability to use natural light to his advantage, creating depth and mood in every shot. He also spoke about the value of patience—waiting for the right expression, the right glance, or the perfect light to transform an ordinary scene into something extraordinary.
The audience was captivated not only by Paul’s stunning images but also by his storytelling ability. He brought each portrait to life with anecdotes about his encounters, making it clear that photography, for him, is as much about people as it is about pictures.
The evening was a true inspiration for all of us. Paul’s passion for photography and his unique way of seeing the world reminded us why we love this craft. We left the event with fresh motivation to look beyond the technical aspects of photography and focus more on the stories we can tell through our images.
A big thank you to Paul Hassell for sharing his insights and experiences. It was a night filled with creativity, inspiration, and a renewed appreciation for the power of photography.
